Students will be assigned to one of 8 groups, and each group will have the responsibility of presenting and leading a discussion on one of the books from the reading list.

Please use the book “Coldest Winter Ever” by Sister Souljah
Each student will be required to participate in a group presentation and the construction or creation of a group paper. Students will be assigned to one of 8 groups, and each group will have the responsibility of presenting and leading a discussion on one of the books from the reading list. The presentation should last no longer than 20 minutes, and the question and answer session should last for five to ten minutes. The organization and structure of the presentation can be done in a number of different formats.
In previous classes, students have employed either the traditional academic presentation format, workshop, or panel discussion. Some students have used guest speakers who are experts or knowledgeable on the particular topic area covered in the book. Other students have used videos and other technological mediums to convey their messages. Essentially, what I am trying to convey is that creativity is encouraged.
Furthermore, the group will be responsible for developing questions that will elicit interesting and thought-provoking discourse at the end of its presentation. To provide more insight upon the topic area assigned and facilitate enlightening discourse, students are encouraged to provide their classmates with additional readings. Each student in the group will be responsible for some part of the presentation or paper. As noted, students will also be required to turn in a 4-5-page group paper (1 collective paper), which will integrate the material given in the presentation and book. The paper must be in A.P.A. format (e.g., double-spaced, title page, reference page etc.).

When you doze off while i’m directing a class is one altered state of consciousness, other altered states of consciousness occur through meditation, biofeedback, and hypnosis.

For Discussion Forums, you will do an activity called Think-Pair-Share.
T : (Think) Teachers begin by asking a specific question about the video or reading provided. The student will individually respond to these questions in an Independent Discussion. (these are always due Thursdays)
P : (Pair) Each student will pair up with another student in the class by reviewing someone else’s individual post and answering another set of questions. (these questions are listed as Reply to Peer)
S : (Share) Students share their thinking with their partner. The person you replied to will then discuss further their thoughts on the topic and any questions you posed to them. Finally, you will respond back to that peer’s response for one final time.
Think of this as a discussion with a peer – there should be some back and forth. More than likely you too will respond to a peer within your own initial post as well. You’ve now interacted with at least 2 peers in class.
Initial Post Due Thursday at 11:59 pm
Think Directions:
The word consciousness sometimes refers to the waking state in which a person is awake. Psychoactive drugs or mind-altering drugs also affect consciousness. These drugs can distort people’s perceptions, change their moods, or cause them to see or hear things that are not real. Categories of drugs that affect consciousness include depressants, stimulants and hallucinogens.

How stressful are these experiences for you?

People react to and cope with stress in their lives in a variety of ways. Consider your midterm and final exams as examples. How stressful are these experiences for you? What are the physiological, emotional, behavioral, and cognitive reactions you usually encounter before and during your exams? In other words, what changes do you notice in your body, emotions, behavior, and thoughts? Psychologists recommend several strategies to cope with stress, including emotional, behavioral, cognitive, emotion-focused, and problem-focused methods. Which strategies do you currently use during exam time? Which methods would you consider incorporating in the future?
In a multi-paragraph essay, first describe your physiological, emotional, behavioral, and cognitive reactions to the stressor of taking exams, and then discuss two strategies (emotional, behavioral, or cognitive) that you might use to cope more effectively. Be sure to include details from class materials, readings, and research to support your discussion.
